The Signs & Lines crew made sure that his office was well and truly done-over, knowing that this would greatly please said leader - not!!! - who is a birthday bar humbug at the best of times. We now have our very own "One Foot in the Grave" Victor Meldrew in da' house!
We had to make up a new sign this week (see left) as our 'illustrious leader' celebrated a half century with the usual combination of balloons, singing, cake ... and a large degree of depression! The Signs & Lines crew made sure that his office was well and truly done-over, knowing that this would greatly please said leader - not!!! - who is a birthday bar humbug at the best of times. We now have our very own "One Foot in the Grave" Victor Meldrew in da' house!

Thursday 28 April 2016: "World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day".
Signs & Lines marked the day by displaying posters throughout the workshops and offices. On this day we remembered those that have died from a work-related injury or illness. Our safety culture requires us to constantly discuss and consult with staff to raise awareness of safety and health at work, and take action to prevent injuries and death. This is our No 1 priority. One of our 1st year signage apprentices is really shaking up the Motocross world. Mark my words, Aaron Lane is a name to remember for the future. Aaron started riding BMX at 8 years old and transitioned to Motocross when he turned 16. Witnessing the calm and pleasant natured Aaron learning the signage trade in our workshops, you would never believe that he could transform into a "track demon" out of hours! Aaron's ambition is to ride in the BMX speed race in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo - watch this space! Check out these photos and results from various tracks across Australia: - WA - at the Wanneroo State Champs 2016 - QLD - at the Nerang National round in early 2016 on the Gold Coast - placed 7th - VIC - at the 2015 National round in Shepparton, where Aaron picked up a 3rd place overall. Housekeeping is always a tricky concept - especially in a busy workshop and office environment. Keeping everything in its place, and a place for everything, is a wonderful concept but the reality is often less achievable. That's why we introduced our 5S programme in 2015. For those not familiar with 5S, it's a Japanese concept first developed to describe how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectively by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. Our 5S programme is based on the 5S methodology and includes regular rewards for those who are demonstrating real talent in the areas of: S - SET IN ORDER S - SORT S - SHINE S - STANDARDISE S - SUSTAIN So far we've had over 10 awards made - below are a few examples of our winners so far. There's a good reason why we take safety so seriously at Signs & Lines... and as this recent article outlines, when we are dealing with large signage structures it is imperative that they are well designed, properly manufactured and installed such that they are robust enough to withstand any environmental factors that may arise.
Our thoughts go to the families of the three people that tragically perished in this incident, and a moments sad reflection to all those involved in this disaster. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/aussie-signs-fined-250000-over-deadly-swanston-street-wall-collapse-20160204-gmlcjj.html Safety matters at Signs & Lines - and is our key priority. Our OSHMS (Occupational Safety & Health Management System) is well developed and regularly reviewed both internal audits and externally certified by safety consultants. Our safety slogan this year is 'Think SMART before you START' and, as with most things in life, careful planning and organisation is a valuable way to mitigate the risks that we encounter every hour of every day. The workplace is no different. As much as we can do as an organisation, at the end of the day our motto is that it is down to each individual to take responsibility for safety - of themselves and others. It's been an amazing year for Signs & Lines on a number of levels. Our team is flying high with some outstanding work in all facets of signage and our clients continue to be delighted with our polish and professionalism. In true S&L tradition, our Xmas BBQ wrap up last Friday embraced our team's many personalities (!) and gave us all a chance to breathe a sigh of relief that the holiday season is just around the corner. Santa sent a ring-in who arrived just in time with his toy reindeer (Rudolf was resting up for the big night ahead) and dished out gifts for all, including some bubbles gifts for our little guests who enjoyed attacking everyone in sight! WARNING: To the uninitiated some of these pictures may cause concern! This week marks the anticipated arrival of 2 new additions to our team. Firstly we await news of Cain's baby who was due yesterday, but is clearly deciding to give his parents a few more days of nail-biting wait - maybe it will decide to come down the chimney with Santa on Christmas Day! Our second arrival is a new addition to our Fleet in the shape of a sparkly new work van for Peter. We're calling this an early birthday present for Pete, who celebrates his 60th birthday on January 6th and as our longest serving employee (over 20 years!) deserves these lovely new wheels! Many man hours, much thought and meticulous planning are almost at an end for this project. It has featured in various guises on our social media pages but the over-riding aspect is YELLOW. The final reveal will be this week but in the meantime here are a couple more shots from last week in the Workshops to show our various stages of work. Any idea where this is going Sandgropers? This month two of our Cert III Signage apprentices, Phil and Jack, were lucky to take part in a technical vinyl application workshop at Polytechnic West. Trade supplier, Spandex, organised the event in conjunction with Avery Graphics. Theo Kostarakis from Avery Graphics delivered a highly instructional and hands on course which our apprentices really enjoyed, so much so that Phil has declared he wants to specialise in vehicle wraps! Photo evidence below. Thanks to Spandex, Avery and Polytechnic West for the wonderful opportunity! It's always rewarding to see the younger members of the team practicing the skills they've learned at TAFE or alongside our tradesman. This morning's tour around the factory found three of our juniors hard at work doing various sign making tasks ... and doing a really nice job.
This is a great example of Aaron using a jig for multiple lot plates so that there's less room for error with a consistent quality finish. Phil and Jack are applying frosted vinyl to doors to act as a security screen at our S&L Digital Signage offices which now look very professional and fit for purpose. Great work lads :) |
