WOODEN SIGNAGE

26/10/2018

Wood makes a great sign! Think about it. It uses a great raw product. Interesting patterns and features in wood highlight the quality of the sign. Durability is guaranteed - of course. It's a sustainable material. And, importantly, wood strikes a point of difference in amongst the plethora of ACM and metal signage.

Signs & Lines specialise in timber signs - engraved and layered for that extra special effect. With our fully programmed CNC router machine and our experienced CAD personnel we can custom build and manufacture your quality personalised timber signs, in any font timber or size. For that extra-special effect, our flatbed printer can print onto the wood for imagery or other special detail.

These signs below were produced in bulk for Carousel Shopping Centre directional signage. Don't they look smart!

3D SIGNS & LETTERING

26/10/2018

When you need to make your brand/logo or information stand out 3D lettering comes highly recommended.

3D letters add a dynamic factor to your branding and are highly versatile - they can be made is all shapes and sizes, plus they can be created from a range of materials and illuminated in a number of innovative ways for bold, high impact marketing. Shadows, halo lighting or internal illumination all add to a 3D lettering sign's impact.

Leaps and bounds in technology mean 3D lettering is now an accessible option for most businesses. Here are a  couple of commonly asked questions:-

What materials work best?

There are so many options to choose from:- acrylic, medium density fibreboard, brass, PVC, foam or aluminium composite panel (ACP) are a few popular options. Wood is also an option and we love pushing the design boundaries, so let us know what you're after and we'd be happy to help!

Why choose IIluminated letters?
These are going to have maximum effect - day and night. Assuming your customers, users and potential next customers only operate in daylight hours is short-sighted (excuse the pun!). Light up the letters themselves with energy efficient LEDs or create a halo effect with back lighting.

EFFICIENCIES IN SIGNAGE MULTIPLES

26/10/2018

One of our main business goals is efficiency - for obvious reasons!  Our goal is to get the job done with optimal resource utilisation - this way the client benefits from our economies of scale (ie. price!) and the  timeframe to complete the job is minimised (ie. we meet deadlines!).  And let's face it, price and deadlines are highly valuable commodities in the business world.

For the last few years we've manufactured and installed the signage for City of Stirling parks and reserves. With the recent order for 35+ information signs our team went into 'scale' mode, putting together the signage (shown here in our workshop) through a streamlined process of metal fabrication, painting, vinyl application and finishing. With a job of this scale, storage space for the signage prior to installation is key - as is careful marking and ID to ensure that the right signs go to the right parks for installation. Sounds simple !!

Next time you're walking the dog, having a picnic or exploring some of the wonderful bushland in the City of Stirling, take a look at the signage and you may appreciate its more humble beginnings - as one of many -  prepared (with care) in our workshop.

SIGNAGE IN TRANSIT

26/10/2018

Whether big signs, or small, it's essential that once they have been manufactured in our workshops they are prepared, packaged and transported to site effectively to ensure no damage is incurred.

This week's transit of a large pylon sign is a good example of the logistics involved in transportation. Despite our purpose built workshops and large driveway, movement of signage is not necessarily straightforward! As with everything we do, planning is key. A traffic management plan is used with our operators in place to ensure that other road users are kept safe.

Moving or flipping over-size signage in-house is either achieved using our mobile gantrys or contracting a franna crane to do the heavy lifting. We often use hiabs to transport items safely.

DIRECT ME - GIVE ME A DIRECTION?

Could you please give me directions to the train station?  Where's the lift?
Which way to the toilets? Is there an access ramp nearby?

Sound familiar? Business' and governments of today cannot afford to not have good directional signage to aid their customers and keep them safe.

Just think about how many times a day we need direction? Literally dozens!! Signage plays such an important part in our everyday life that sometimes we don't actually realise how critical it is to easing us through the day, guiding us to our destination or helping us in our time of need.

A direction sign, more fully defined as a direction, position, or indication sign by the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, is any road sign used primarily to give information about the location of either the driver or possible destinations, and are considered a subset of the informative signs group.

Did you know that direction signs are the oldest type of road sign? The first direction signs were
milestones on the Roman road network; helping to find a location on the long, straight roads was difficult, and hence, large stones were placed at intervals along the roads, giving the distance in Roman miles to nearby major cities, and usually to the capitals of major provinces. These are still in evidence today.

We make ALOT of directional signs. To find out more about how directional signage can really make an impact AND assist your customers, contact Signs & Lines today on +8 9274 5151 or [email protected].

DFO'S CONCRETE SIGNAGE MAKES AN IMPACT

The announcement of a new home for fashion, AKA DFO Perth, sent many fashionistas into a spin, and quite rightly so.  The much anticipated new retail hub at the Airport site has caused quite a stir given our states love for a bargain! The image of the premium shopping outlet is distinctive and has been developed from scratch by a joint venture between Perth Airport and Vicinity Group.

With 113 stores, the Direct Factory Outlet (DFO) on the airport estate covers an area of 24,000m² and includes food, beverage outlets, plus parking for 1600 cars.

Georgiou Group commenced work on the site in mid-2017, and contracted Signs & Lines to produce the signage throughout the site including a unique range of internal, external, directional, information and statutory signage. Our team designed, developed, manufactured and installed signs big and small using the full talents of our in-house team of designers, project managers and tradesman.

The concrete sign designs were of particular note on this project that required us to step out of ‘the norm’ and creatively adapt our conventional way of manufacturing signs.

Concrete Blade Pylon Entry Signage
Entry signage undoubtedly plays a huge part in the overall appeal of a destination. Our team’s recommendation of using concrete to achieve the overall industrial “look” that the architect was trying to capture, pushed these two monoliths outside of the conventional manufacturing methods associated with signage pylons.

The ground breaking design called for a vertical concrete blade (the larger of the two weighing in at just less than 40 tonnes), made and installed as a solo freestanding tilt-up panel with a twist. The blade would present as an off-square parallelogram with one of its base corners buried in the ground to form a flat base. Both faces of the pylons boast 3D internally illuminated branding (DFO PERTH) covering an area in excess of 6m2, fabricated from perspex with an automotive 2pac paint finish and halo led illumination. The lower section of the faces feature a debossed shadow effect set into the concrete, achieved by incorporating 3D forms into the pre-cast formwork prepared off-site. After extensive site preparation ensuring that the footing locations were formed to pinpoint precision, the blades were craned into position. Once in place, the final footings were poured. The two pylon signs required over 42m3 of concrete, over 1500 metres of reinforcing steel plus considerable engineering, precision fabrication and logistics.

Car Park Zone Markers
The concrete theme was extended to the car park zone markers which at over 2 metres tall were designed to identify the carpark zones.  The 5 precast, single piece concrete plinths were finished with a class 2 finish to match the pylons, and feature automotive 2pac sprayed aluminium identification & branding elements.

WESTFIELD CAROUSEL SHOPPING CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT

It was one of our largest projects ever but the $350 million upgrade of Carousel Shopping Centre for Westfield and Scentre Group also proved to be one of our most successful. With literally thousands of front of house, back of house, fascia, wayfinding, lift, directional and statutory signs required, our teams went into action to deliver in time for the grand reopening in August.

Despite its scale, this project was a demanding, yet rewarding experience. The project team managed the whole process with great efficiency and our team were outstanding.

We've showcased this project in a Case Study which outlines the key signage and challenges faced throughout the works. Find it here or link below.
