20 YEARS AT SIGNS & LINES - A PERSPECTIVE

20 Years Young - a heartfelt perspective
By Josie Simmonds, Business Manager @ Signs & Lines

Ok, we don't like being show ponies but this is one anniversary that we're pretty proud of... 20 years of ownership of Signs & Lines. In terms of a signage celebration we thought we'd recap our 20 years.

On 1st July 2001 we purchased Signs & Lines as a small going concern from a husband and wife couple, Chris and Jeni Maine. It was small. Very small. A typical family operation with 2 staff members.

Along come the blow-ins - Mark and Josie Simmonds... Fresh off the boat and with limited sign experience. Not a typical recipe for success!! However, looking back it was a logical step to make for the Pommies. With Mark's cabinet making and kitchen design experience and Josie's marketing and business development background it made sense. And it still makes sense!

With independent roles and different perspectives there is always room for debate and collaboration. Decision making has never been tough - despite there being some very tough decisions to make. Put simply, Mark and I work well together. He is more into big picture, opening doors, working with clients whereas I am the detail person ie the person that makes it happen (well most of the time!).  So a good match of goal setter and goal getter.

Picture
The Inbetween Years
There's alot of ground covered in the couple of decades that have passed since 1/7/01. Many stories. Thousands of signs. Lovely people. Some really great people - many who have stayed with us for either the whole or the main part of the journey. Some who have stayed for only a short time. Most importantly, the team is what makes the company and there is no doubt that at the 20 year mark we have a really FANTASTIC group of staff.

Work Hard, Play Hard is Our Motto!
In 2001, as well as buying Signs & Lines, we also got married and then started a family in the very early years. We opened another branch in WA in the early days too. See our timeline for more keynote dates.  It all feels like a bit of a blur to be honest. Over the years we have definitely worked hard - and had a good go at playing hard too!

Picture
After 5 years of ownership we took some advice from a sign guru - AKA Master Shifu/Peter Ledger - on how we could expand our business into the next level. With a massive leap of faith we created our showcase premises in 5 Meliador Way, Midvale. Over 1500m2 of factory and offices, purpose built, purpose designed. Created with a logical flow of a sign business in mind. In 2007 we moved in and have never looked back.

Along the way we have become very focused on processes and systems. We've grown to ''love'' them!  Because we know they make sense and our focus on better processes allows us to make better signs here in the factory and once installed in the field. Fundamentally our processes allow us to deliver better projects, which makes our clients happier and our bottom line healthier. A trifecta of good things!

Diversification has been a key part of our approach. Let's be honest. Some ideas did not pass the test. A few ''hair brain'' schemes did not get past first base. Other ideas are still bubbling (of course, standing still is never an option!). Digital signage did however get off the ground and 7 years later we are proud to lead the field in this exciting technological space - see Yap!digital for more. We believe this is the future of signage. It just makes sense - the generations to come will want and expect technology to drive their world.

Picture
What Next?
Fast Forward 20 years and the photos on our websites -
Signs & Lines and Yap!digital - show the range, scale and complexity of some of the projects we have completed over the time. What the photos don't show is the thinking process, the great interactions of all our staff, the blood, sweat and tears, the client's smiles, the design process, the way we manage projects and many, many more things.

What a signage celebration - 20 years of all these amazing achievements.
  • This is not the end.
  • We are still flexing our muscles and working hard:)
  • There are many more projects in us!
  • Do we have another 20 years of signage still to come?  What a celebration that would be!

To find out just why Signs & Lines leads the signage pack here in WA, put our professionalism in the spotlight.  Hire us for your next project and put us to the test:)

And, to everyone who has helped us along the way,
Thank You!

In 2019 PS Structures commissioned the team to produce signage for Curtin University’s new Midland Campus. The Midland Campus forms a key component of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority’s Midland master plan, which aims to reposition the historic Workshops precinct as a medical and education hub.

Signage types included in the project covered a broad scope. Internally we provided the following:

Turnkey Solution
We provide traffic & parking systems for companies both large and small.

For the Concert Hall car park the new entry digital signs clearly display the bays available at the entry.

These single sided P10 LED outdoor screens replaced outdated technology. As part of our thorough robust solution, we supplied a thermostatically controlled IT Cabinet to ensure full operational effectiveness of the control equipment at all times so the control equipment is not affected by the weather elements of heat, dust, water.

LED car park signage in the future can also utilise the technology for safety messaging eg. ‘Don’t drink & drive’, product advertising, promotions, weather updates, traffic reports or security messages ‘Is your car locked?’ At Airports where bus shuttle systems required to take travellers to their terminal digital car park signs could show shuttle timetables, for example.

Updated parking rate cards and prices can be displayed on entry and locations of pay machines are other ways in which the digital technology can be employed to provide a better parking experience – good communication is key as we know from the ‘must haves’ outlined at the start!

Taking the Next Step

Wayfinding Signage for VenuesWest

May was a busy month in our workshops as we finished off some new wayfinding signage for the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre for VenuesWest. Our brief included x6 3-sided triangular totems and x7 two-sided totems displaying information on swimming and access information in the lake environment. In addition we created post and pole signage for Swim Limits and Craft Flow plans. Here are the signs being QC'd (quality checked!) before they left for site. More site photos to come post install.
Champion Lakes Regatta Centre is purpose built for community, state, national and international sport competitions including rowing, canoeing, dragon boating and triathlon events.
It is also a training ground for Australia's Olympic kayaking team and the venue hosted the National Sprint Championships - a qualifying event for Rio2016.

Get in Touch for Wayfinding Advice
Use of wayfinding is becoming more and more popular as councils, government and organisations recognise the importance of efficiently directing people around a space. Especially important in crowded environments,  businesses are realising that there is an equally critical safety aspect to helping people to navigate their way during an emergency. Event organisers and venues have a responsibility to ensure that users of their facility are kept safe - and this is where signage plays its part.

Interactive digital wayfinding signage is also great way to protect and engage guests. Use of modern technology will let users find information and self-explore an area using touchscreens, video walls, digital kiosks or digital wayfinding displays.

JCDecaux recently upgraded some of their existing digital and static sign assets with the addition of some new digital screens, totems and a digital lightbox at Perth Airport's Terminal 3 and Terminal 4.

All in all the Yap!digital team managed the design, manufacture and installation of 12 major new digital assets - for the full story refer to our Case Study below.

CITY OF STIRLING - PARKS & RESERVES SIGNAGE - CASE STUDY

5/8/2019

Signs & Lines have been working with City of Stirling since 2011. The City has 1,780 hectares of open space for reserves, parks, natural conservation areas and special purpose lands, including over 600 hectares of natural bushland, 26 wetland sites and 6.5 kilometres of coastal dunes and beaches. All these areas require effective signage and this is where we come in...

The City's sign strategy for its Parks and Reserves follows a hierarchy of signs of monolith and directional format in varying size, construction and styling. Read our Case Study below that outlines our signage projects.

The design rationale caters for single or double sided plinths or monoliths, with high quality 2 pac painted header section, and a deliberately rusted lower section known as corten. The reverse side of the sign is either painted, or finished in just corten to provide a more rustic, natural effect that blends into the environment and is a low maintenance finish. Corten steel is blessed with atmospheric corrosion resistance which enables it to be used in a paint-less form for many structural/architectural ways.
