20 YEARS AT SIGNS & LINES - A PERSPECTIVE

20 Years Young - a heartfelt perspective
By Josie Simmonds, Business Manager @ Signs & Lines

Ok, we don't like being show ponies but this is one anniversary that we're pretty proud of... 20 years of ownership of Signs & Lines. In terms of a signage celebration we thought we'd recap our 20 years.

On 1st July 2001 we purchased Signs & Lines as a small going concern from a husband and wife couple, Chris and Jeni Maine. It was small. Very small. A typical family operation with 2 staff members.

Along come the blow-ins - Mark and Josie Simmonds... Fresh off the boat and with limited sign experience. Not a typical recipe for success!! However, looking back it was a logical step to make for the Pommies. With Mark's cabinet making and kitchen design experience and Josie's marketing and business development background it made sense. And it still makes sense!

With independent roles and different perspectives there is always room for debate and collaboration. Decision making has never been tough - despite there being some very tough decisions to make. Put simply, Mark and I work well together. He is more into big picture, opening doors, working with clients whereas I am the detail person ie the person that makes it happen (well most of the time!).  So a good match of goal setter and goal getter.

The Inbetween Years
There's alot of ground covered in the couple of decades that have passed since 1/7/01. Many stories. Thousands of signs. Lovely people. Some really great people - many who have stayed with us for either the whole or the main part of the journey. Some who have stayed for only a short time. Most importantly, the team is what makes the company and there is no doubt that at the 20 year mark we have a really FANTASTIC group of staff.

Work Hard, Play Hard is Our Motto!
In 2001, as well as buying Signs & Lines, we also got married and then started a family in the very early years. We opened another branch in WA in the early days too. See our timeline for more keynote dates.  It all feels like a bit of a blur to be honest. Over the years we have definitely worked hard - and had a good go at playing hard too!

Picture
After 5 years of ownership we took some advice from a sign guru - AKA Master Shifu/Peter Ledger - on how we could expand our business into the next level. With a massive leap of faith we created our showcase premises in 5 Meliador Way, Midvale. Over 1500m2 of factory and offices, purpose built, purpose designed. Created with a logical flow of a sign business in mind. In 2007 we moved in and have never looked back.

Along the way we have become very focused on processes and systems. We've grown to ''love'' them!  Because we know they make sense and our focus on better processes allows us to make better signs here in the factory and once installed in the field. Fundamentally our processes allow us to deliver better projects, which makes our clients happier and our bottom line healthier. A trifecta of good things!

Diversification has been a key part of our approach. Let's be honest. Some ideas did not pass the test. A few ''hair brain'' schemes did not get past first base. Other ideas are still bubbling (of course, standing still is never an option!). Digital signage did however get off the ground and 7 years later we are proud to lead the field in this exciting technological space - see Yap!digital for more. We believe this is the future of signage. It just makes sense - the generations to come will want and expect technology to drive their world.

Picture
What Next?
Fast Forward 20 years and the photos on our websites -
Signs & Lines and Yap!digital - show the range, scale and complexity of some of the projects we have completed over the time. What the photos don't show is the thinking process, the great interactions of all our staff, the blood, sweat and tears, the client's smiles, the design process, the way we manage projects and many, many more things.

What a signage celebration - 20 years of all these amazing achievements.
  • This is not the end.
  • We are still flexing our muscles and working hard:)
  • There are many more projects in us!
  • Do we have another 20 years of signage still to come?  What a celebration that would be!

And, to everyone who has helped us along the way,
Thank You!

Tools of the Trade - Signage: Part II

In any manufacturing industry, having the right tools of trade is vital.

None so much in Signage. Signage is a skilled industry, requiring precision (and sometimes grunt!) to achieve the quality results that stand the test of time, environment and social impact.

In this second in our 'Tools of the Trade' series we take a look at some of the ways we are able to create a professional signage finish, time and time again.

Our tools of the trade are made up from the skills, instruments, and other equipment that you need in order to do our job properly. Here are just a selection of the tools that we need to produce quality signage. However in reality the list extends to much more sophisticated machinery and equipment.
Consider our CNC router bed (shown above) that precision cuts the substrates to exacting measurements. Its diamond head can create shapes, letters and any custom design to match logos or branding.
Picture
Another amazing tool in our armour is the UV flatbed printer (see below). The precision printer prints to very high quality for long lasting results. It can also print white.

This is an amazing tool with the technical whizz to print multiple colours, artwork and designs onto all types of substrate.

The list is very long but includes colourbond, aluminium, material, mini-orb, metals, acrylic ACM, etc, etc.

Other tools includes our welding equipment for mig and tig welding (see below). Our skilled signage specialists make the frames and structural elements to support a sign. Both internal and external signage needs to have a strong and robust framework. With the help of our detailed shop drawings our qualified fabricators ensure that the signs are fit for purpose.

SIGNAGE WITH A SMILE!

30/9/2019

“A smile costs nothing, but creates much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.” – Dale Carnegie.

We're not all happy all the time, granted, but research tells us that smiling at work will make a difference to your, and other people's day. Here are 10 good reasons to smile at work:-

  1. Increases happiness and enjoyment at work.
  2. You never know who’s watching!
  3. Smiling is contagious. When you smile in most of the cases people smile back:)
  4. You become more positive.
  5. It makes you more attractive.
  6. Smiling makes you memorable. A study has shown that people who smile are 3 times more likely to be remembered.
  7. Smiling relieves stress. Endorphins are released in your body, even when you force it.
  8. People who smile are perceived as more successful and confident. Smiling will help you get promoted.
  9. There is a proven correlation between smiling and an increase of productivity in teams.
  10. Smiling changes your whole body language!
Rod [pictured below] seems to have got 1-10 nailed. Well done - love the energy & enthusiasm your smile brings!

A SIGNAGE FACILITY LIKE NO OTHER

21/3/2019

"I had no idea it would be like this!" is a typical visitors' reaction to Signs & Lines' purpose built signage facility. Our Google Virtual Tour will give you an insight if visiting yourself is impractical ...
http://goo.gl/xp3HcM

For those that haven't been to our facility, we have a massive factory and offices located at 5 Meliador Way, Midvale, WA.

Once you've been through Reception -  where we can showcase some our of key projects and give you a demonstration of the latest digital signage touchscreen technology -
the Production areas beckon. Arguably, downstairs is where all the action happens, and it's fair to say the majority of people get most excited by our production areas. Upstairs our sales, admin and project management teams beaver away to ensure everything works like clockwork.

Come and check out our 8 key production areas:

Graphics Room - flatbed printer, large format digital printer, laminator, vinyl plotter etc
Assembly Workshop - where we put all the signage component together prior to despatch/installation
Metal Fabrication Workshop - here we make the frames and lightboxes to order
Paint Workshop - our booth, mixing room and oven combine for the spray painting element of works
Router Workshop - our CNC router cuts and forms shapes ready for signage
Metal Overflow Workshop - this large area is where our oversize projects end up
Yap!Digital - here's where we test and store the digital screens and components prior to assembly
Mezzanine - an area for everything else - banners, flags, archives, samples  - you name it!

We'd love to see you and show you around. Contact us on +61 8 9274 5151 or [email protected] to call up and make a time for a visit.

OUR PAINT SHOP NAILS IT

Gotta love nails! Clearly we couldn't do our trade without a fair few of these... and the picture below goes to show the lengths we'll go to to ensure your nails match your sign colour pantone, with a truly professional finish.

It's fair to say Jason, our paint tradesman, nails it every time with a high quality, auto finish. Using 2 pac paints this gives a durable, lustrous sheen to every piece of work we output - whether a static sign for outside in a car par, a digital map table designed as a touchscreen in a sales office, or a large fascia sign for a shopping centre.

To find out more about our signage paint expertise, give us a call on +61 8 9274 5151 or email us today: [email protected].  Feel welcome to come and visit our workshops in Midvale and see for yourself!

RED DOG SIGNAGE - THE FINAL WRAP

9/5/2018

Picture
We've featured our work in the Pilbara for Red Dog before - but let's just say, this time we're going to approach from a slightly different angle. The install story and heat!

There are many adjectives that Warren, our super-installer, used to describe his install trip up to Dampier. One stands out – HOT! Heat management was a critical factor during the installation. Despite being programmed originally to fall in the cooler months, the project was delayed for reasons beyond our control (plus a rather major cylone warning).  As a result of this install our Safety Reps meeting last month covered heat management strategies which was then taken to May's Toolbox meeting for discussion. Needless to say there will be a few new initiatives being introduced eg. urine charts, thermometer and frozen electrolyte drinks next summer. Hydration is the key.

The Installation - Warren's Story
To follow is Warren's version of events which you may want to take the time to enjoy over a cup of tea (or frozen electrolyte drink!) - a steamy recount no less!:-

"As an installer you have to expect some pretty tough days; we go into some testing areas and its heavy going sometimes, being able to overcome and adapt is a trait of quality tradies and its part of why I love doing it so much...(Im pretty good at it too!). This install however tested every trick, tool and thought I had, and at times I doubted whether I could complete it. But from the comfort of my own house back in Perth, in a shady, cool spot, I am proud to say I did.

KEEPING IT SAFE WHEN SIGNAGE IS ON THE MOVE

24/4/2018

We've had a few larger signs make their way out of the workshops recently. This monster digital sign for Daktronics was on its way to site but first we had to manoeuvre it out of the yard using a franna crane, and onto the hiab for its onward journey.

Our team use a pre-start meeting to discuss all elements of the move in advance of works. The whole process was well orchestrated by Andrew and the franna operator. They say that you learn something new every day, and this day was no different. On a break I asked the franna operator why the crane was so named - well FRANNA stands for: “Francis and Anna” the names of the company founder and his daughter. Franna is a manufacturer of Pick & Carry cranes with a lifting capacity from 10 to 25 tonnes.

All in all another great manoeuvre by our team of sign superstars.

'WELCOME TO DAMPIER' PAINTS THE TOWN RED!

We featured the Red Dog story on the blog a few weeks ago and the rest of this interpretive project is progressing along nicely through our metal fabrication and paint shops. The red paint work is definitely striking and works perfectly with the red dog analogy (well that's a bit of a long shot, but worth a try!!).

Our paint work is second to none and as demonstrated here to good effect, the finish quality is down to the dedicated trade skills of our painter Jason (seen mixing up a new brew of red!).

Here are a few 'happy snaps' of the works in progress as they move through the workshops.

LANDING A BIG FISH OR 4!

4/12/2017

Proving that it's not all hard grind and signs, 8 brave folk from Signs & Lines braved the oceans in late November in desperate search of the 'big one'.

Armed with the same tenacious attitude they apply to their daily signage work, these boys were whisked out into the Indian Ocean at 5.30am on a specialised fishing charter from Hillarys Boat Harbour.

'The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope'.

Despite the swell, 7 of the 8 managed to throw a line in with some pretty amazing catches during the day. Biggest fish of the day accolade went to Roddy who landed a beauty (a Queen Snapper 85 cms long) and Warren caught his first fish in WA (a lovely Sea Sweep). Poor AJ was as sick as a dog after 10 minutes so unfortunately missed out on all the action ;(

See the pics below and check out those smiles! Organised superbly by Peter, maybe this will become an annual outing, especially as Pete got to take the fish home to the lovely Linda for tea!?!
