So why is acrylic a Signmakers friend? There are probably many reasons us Sign professionals like acrylic so much. Let’s start with its strength (it resembles glass but is far stronger), or the fact that it’s relatively lightweight but has a high strength to weight ratio, and not forgetting that it has a great ‘’look and feel’’ with a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. However, one of the key reasons us signies enjoy using this amazing substance so much is its ability to be shaped. As a plastic product, acrylic can be heated to form many shapes and then used to make boxes, letters, and beautiful 3D shapes for signage applications both inside and out. Alex was recently making some letters in our workshop – here are a few ‘before and after’ shots! Phil’s just completing his first year of a Cert III Signage apprenticeship at Swan TAFE. We know he’s been busy putting his newly acquired signage skills to good work in the factory and I asked Phil what’s been the highlight of TAFE so far. "I really like it” says Phil, “everyone has made friends and Alan’s a good dude” [Alan being the lecturer at Swan TAFE!]. “Recently we’ve been doing a logo project for the 'Iron Horse” restaurant. First we had to design the logo with Corel Draw which was new and interesting for me as I haven’t done much design stuff before. We then printed our logo onto clear Perspex so that we could project the image onto the wall and hand paint the design. We painted the base colours first, and built up the colours into a finished design.”
And the favorite bit of the Apprenticeship so far? "That’s easy," says Phil, “I would do brushwork all day given half the chance, but I know it’s not used much anymore which is a real shame." We reckon Phil is right to be looking pretty pleased with himself! OK, so the image and the title's a little misleading: despite the company boasting quite a large number of musos (Yours Truly included), Signs & Lines is yet to launch a rock band and send it off to tour the country - though never say never...! No, the 'tour' I refer to was one completed by Signs & Lines' fitters Warren and Mark when they travelled to 'tour' Port Hedland and install signage for our client, FORM. And whether describing it as 'legendary' also violates the Trades Descriptions Act I can't possibly comment either! All this aside, I managed to grab a chat with the project's Account Manager, Jesse French (one of the aforementioned musos, in fact), who kindly shared some details about the project... Safety matters - alot - so this month we're putting the spotlight squarely on SAFETY and have registered our activities with Worksafe's "Safe Work October" which is part of a national initiative to raise awareness. Signs & Lines have already held a number of initiatives during the month, starting off with a real focus on Dial Before You Dig for our staff commissioning work, and those out and about installing signs.
The Safety Team of Josie, Tull, Matt, Daniel and Rachel may have a few other surprises up their sleeve too! A huge thank you to everyone involved!
